Carbonless copy paper (NCR paper) is a type of paper that is coated with a layer of special chemicals that allows it to create copies without the use of carbon paper. Components of Carbonless Copy Paper
CB - Coated Back
Coated back (CB) paper starts out as bond grade paper. It is coated with microencapsulated dye on the backside of the paper. This paper reacts to pressure, such as handwriting, by releasing dye from the microcapsules that react with the clay and resin on coated front (CF) paper to produce an image in the shape of the pressure applied.
CFB - Coated Front And Back
Coated front and back (CFB) paper starts out as bond grade paper. It is coated with resin and clay on the front side of the paper. This paper reacts with dye released by pressure from the coated back (CB) paper to produce an image in the shape of the pressure applied. It is also coated with microencapsulated dye on the backside of the paper which releases dye from the microcapsules, that react with the clay and resin on coated front (CF) paper to produce an image. In a multi-part set with more than 2 sheets CFB comprises all the parts except for the first and last sheet.
CF - Coated Front
Coated front (CF) paper starts out as bond grade paper. It is coated with resin and clay on the front side of the paper. This paper reacts with dye released by pressure from the coated back (CB) paper to produce an image in the shape of the pressure applied.
SC - Self-contained
Self-contained paper has both microencapsulated dye and reactive clay and resin coating on the paper. When pressure is applied the capsules burst and react with the clay and resin producing an image of the area to which the pressure was applied.
As we noted, NCR paper is typically a pair of papers that contain different materials from each other. Highly sensitive microcapsules of chemicals that produce color are embedded on the bottom side of the top sheet of paper. The microcapsules release their contents upon the application of force onto the areas containing them. This alone is not enough to produce an additional copy — you cannot reproduce writing if you use just any piece of paper under this sheet. The chemical within the CB can produce color, but it cannot release it without the help of another substance. That is where the bottom sheet of carbonless copy paper comes in. Its top side has a layer — called the CF, which naturally stands for "coated front" — containing a reactive sort of clay. When the chemical from the CB is released onto the clay, the latter releases a substance of its own that can bring out the color in the former. The result of the ensuing chemical reaction is the perfect reproduction of writing from the top sheet to the bottom one. All of this happens without the use of carbon black, or any carbon — hence the name.
The Difference Between Carbonless Copy Paper and Thermal Receipt Paper

Thermal papers can only be used with thermal printers, while carbonless copy papers are usually compatible with Impact Printers.
Coating

Paper Surface Color
Carbonless copy paper has three different surface color options: white, pink, and canary. In contrast, only a white option is available for thermal paper.
Print-Out Image Color
In thermal paper, the print-out image color is black. However, in carbonless paper, it can be blue or black, depending on the ribbon's color.
Print on the "Image Side" Only
This paper will feed and print without difficulty in your inkjet or laser printer, but proper paper loading is critical. Packages are clearly marked with image side. Load the precollated paper correctly so that your printer prints on the image side of the carbonless paper.
Print the Correct Number of Sheets
Like all other printing, you must print carbonless paper one sheet at a time, so a 2-part form requires you to print two copies and a 3-part form requires you to print three copies. Ex: to print twenty 3-part forms, ask your printer to print 60 times. The result would be twenty 3-part forms.
Verify the Sheet Order
If you printed on the image side, your new form will work. But depending on how your printer feeds paper through the machine, you may need to rearrange the sheets into the correct order if they are reversed.
