What is Carbonless Copy Paper

Carbonless copy paper (NCR paper) is a type of paper that is coated with a layer of special chemicals that allows it to create copies without the use of carbon paper. When pressure is applied from writing or printing on the top sheet, it transfers the ink to the second sheet and so on, creating an identical copy of the original document. NCR paper usually comes in sets of 2 to 5 sheets and is commonly used for forms, receipts, invoices, and other documents that require multiple copies.

Material of Carbonless Copy Paper

Carbonless copy paper consists of two or more sheets of paper coated with micro-encapsulated dye or ink on the back side of the top sheet and reactive clay or developer on the front side of the bottom sheet. The sheets are typically made of high-quality bond paper, but can also be made of other materials such as tag stock, index stock, and art paper. The coatings contain various chemicals such as bisphenol A (BPA) and formaldehyde, but newer formulations are being developed to reduce or eliminate these chemicals.

Application of Carbonless Copy Paper

Invoices and Receipts
Carbonless paper is often used for creating receipts and invoices, especially in businesses such as restaurants, service-based industries, and retail stores. It allows for easy record-keeping and keeps customers and businesses accountable for financial transactions.

Contracts and Agreements
When it comes to making agreements with other parties, carbonless paper is an excellent choice. Copies can be made on-site for all parties involved, creating a clear paper trail for future reference. This can be especially useful in the legal and healthcare industries.

Forms and Logs
Carbonless paper is perfect for creating forms and logs that require multiple copies. It can also be customized with unique logos and branding to make sure that important documents stand out and are easily recognizable.

Components of Carbonless Copy Paper

CB - Coated Back

Coated back (CB) paper starts out as bond grade paper. It is coated with microencapsulated dye on the backside of the paper. This paper reacts to pressure, such as handwriting, by releasing dye from the microcapsules that react with the clay and resin on coated front (CF) paper to produce an image in the shape of the pressure applied.

CFB - Coated Front And Back

Coated front and back (CFB) paper starts out as bond grade paper. It is coated with resin and clay on the front side of the paper. This paper reacts with dye released by pressure from the coated back (CB) paper to produce an image in the shape of the pressure applied. It is also coated with microencapsulated dye on the backside of the paper which releases dye from the microcapsules, that react with the clay and resin on coated front (CF) paper to produce an image. In a multi-part set with more than 2 sheets CFB comprises all the parts except for the first and last sheet.

CF - Coated Front

Coated front (CF) paper starts out as bond grade paper. It is coated with resin and clay on the front side of the paper. This paper reacts with dye released by pressure from the coated back (CB) paper to produce an image in the shape of the pressure applied.

SC - Self-contained

Self-contained paper has both microencapsulated dye and reactive clay and resin coating on the paper. When pressure is applied the capsules burst and react with the clay and resin producing an image of the area to which the pressure was applied.

How Does Carbonless Copy Paper Work?

As we noted, NCR paper is typically a pair of papers that contain different materials from each other. Highly sensitive microcapsules of chemicals that produce color are embedded on the bottom side of the top sheet of paper. The microcapsules release their contents upon the application of force onto the areas containing them. This alone is not enough to produce an additional copy — you cannot reproduce writing if you use just any piece of paper under this sheet. The chemical within the CB can produce color, but it cannot release it without the help of another substance. That is where the bottom sheet of carbonless copy paper comes in. Its top side has a layer — called the CF, which naturally stands for "coated front" — containing a reactive sort of clay. When the chemical from the CB is released onto the clay, the latter releases a substance of its own that can bring out the color in the former. The result of the ensuing chemical reaction is the perfect reproduction of writing from the top sheet to the bottom one. All of this happens without the use of carbon black, or any carbon — hence the name.

How to calculate the weight of roll carbonless paper?
The Difference Between Carbonless Copy Paper and Thermal Receipt Paper

Printer

Thermal papers can only be used with thermal printers, while carbonless copy papers are usually compatible with Impact Printers.

Coating

Thermal papers usually come with a protective coating to prevent thermal image fading. The carbonless copy paper has two chemicals (Coated Front and Coated Back) stored in small capsules. These chemicals get released when there is pressure from a pen or printer applied.

Ribbons

The first page of carbonless receipt paper has a high-quality print due to the use of a traditional printing ribbon, and the pressure applied on the first sheet causes an image to appear on the subsequent pages. There is no requirement for a ribbon in thermal paper.

Paper Surface Color

Carbonless copy paper has three different surface color options: white, pink, and canary. In contrast, only a white option is available for thermal paper.

Print-Out Image Color

In thermal paper, the print-out image color is black. However, in carbonless paper, it can be blue or black, depending on the ribbon's color.

How Do You Print on Carbonless Copy Paper?

Print on the "Image Side" Only
This paper will feed and print without difficulty in your inkjet or laser printer, but proper paper loading is critical. Packages are clearly marked with image side. Load the precollated paper correctly so that your printer prints on the image side of the carbonless paper.

Print the Correct Number of Sheets
Like all other printing, you must print carbonless paper one sheet at a time, so a 2-part form requires you to print two copies and a 3-part form requires you to print three copies. Ex: to print twenty 3-part forms, ask your printer to print 60 times. The result would be twenty 3-part forms.

Verify the Sheet Order

If you printed on the image side, your new form will work. But depending on how your printer feeds paper through the machine, you may need to rearrange the sheets into the correct order if they are reversed.

Staple or Paper Clip Your Form

You are now ready to use your carbonless form. Keep in mind these forms work by physical pressure and contact through the sheets. For best results, use a firm writing style with a ball point pen.

Carbonless Copy Paper Production Process

The number of sheets that can be produced depends on the number of coatings. For example, a two-part carbonless paper has two coatings, while a three-part carbonless paper has three coatings. When pressure is applied, the dye and developer will react in the corresponding microcapsule layer, producing a copy on the subsequent sheet. The production of carbonless copy paper involves several steps

Coating

The base paper is coated with a layer of clay and a layer of microcapsules on top of that.

Printing

The coated paper is then printed with the content that will be copied onto the underlying sheets.

Curing

The paper is then heated to cure the microcapsules, making sure they are set and won't break prematurely.

Tips for Using the Carbonless Copy Paper
